Pledge for Indo-Pak friendship and peace
Attari(Punjab)- Thousands of Punjabis living in border areas gathered here on 14th night to pledge themselves for Indo-Pak peace and friendship. The cultural night with the sufi songs by Hans Raj Hans and syeeda Begum like famous artists continued till the bee hours of 15th August. Organized by Folklore Research Academy Amritsar, the delegation from Pakistan joined on this occasion, which included President of Pakistan Peoples Party of Punjab province in Pakistan, Iqbal Haider, former law minister in Benazir Bhutto Govt. and Senator ,Imtiaz Alam, secretary General of SAFMA.Kishwar Naheed, eminent Urdu writer from Pakistan spoke in a seminar on same theme, a day earlier. Eminent Indians present on occasion were Kuldip Nayar, film maker Mahesh Bhatt, Rajya sabha MP Tarlochan Singh, Akali MLA Veer singh Lopoke, peace activists Kamla Bhasin,Prof. Chaman Lal from JNU, Meena Menon from Mumbai and many more. This programme was dedicated to Dr. Manveen sandhu couple, who had been organizing it till last year and they lost their lives in an accident during the year. Taufiq Kitchlew son of freedom fighter Dr. Saifudin Kitchlew was honored on the occasion.
Around midnight activist moved to wagah border, where hundreds of peace activists from Pakistan also gathered. Though limited entry was allowed till border gate, people lighted candles for peace on both sides and raised slogans like-Indo-Pak friendship long live and Hind Pak Bhai Bhai. Also slogans like-We need bread and not war etc. was raised. International Democratic Party held a rally for peace by hundreds of its activists at the entry point, as they were denied entry by authorities.
